German women began to play ice hockey quite early. The first ice hockey club was founded in 1906. German also has the world class winter sports facilities. Since 1950s, the artificial ice rinks have been built in Germany and a large number were in the western part. Currently, there are totally more than 260 ice rinks and 251 ice hockey clubs in Germany. The ice hockey population has reached to 15,000, 2483 are female.
The women’s ice hockey in Germany has been developed faster since 1970s and became more and more popular. German women’s team has participated in 8 of the first 10 world women’s ice hockey championships and achieved the best performance of the 5th place in the 7th World Women’s Ice Hockey Championship held in 2001 and 9th in 2005 respectively. It also ranked the 5th in the 19th Winter Olympic Games and the 20th winter Olympic Games.
German women’s team is a strong team and has the typical European competing style. The players possess very good technique and strength. The features of its strategy are cooperating, changing rapidly, aggressive, and good at counterattack. German team ranked the 5th in the newest world rank released by IIHF.
